If you’re looking for a delicious, warm, festive beverage for your cold nights by the fire, look no further!

This traditional European mulled red wine hits the spot! The delicious blend of mulling spices, orange rind,  and red wine – with a dash of brandy for good measure – is the perfect choice for Christmas parties, gatherings, or just a cold winter night with someone you love.

This typical winter drink – enjoyed mostly around Christmas is made of wine to which mulling spices, sugar, citrus fruit and raisins are added.

Ingredients:

  • 1 (750 ml) bottle of dry red wine
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • 2-4 tablespoons sugar, honey, or maple syrup to taste (or your desired sweetener)

Instructions

Pour the wine into a saucepan, add cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, orange slices and sugar. Throw in about a teaspoon of orange zest, 2-3 orange slices as well as lemon slices. Pour in freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice. For a lighter version add 100ml of water.

Bring to the boil, let the sugar dissolve and reduce the heat to ‘low’.

Allow to simmer slowly for 15 minutes, giving the spices have time to infuse the wine *IMPORTANT: ensure it isn’t boiling or you could end up with a non-alcoholic version as the alchohol evaporates.

Turn off fire and add rum.

Garnish with an orange slice, cinamon stick, and star anise and serve hot/warm!
